Jacksonville, FL - Big Talbot

TBig Talbot Island State Park is like a dream - beautiful. Shot there yesterday with all this old driftwood. The photographer and I were approached by a park ranger who said 'You must stop shooting. It is the law - illegal illegal illegal' So we packed up all our stuff and pretended that we were finished and then we kept shooting anyways. The beach was empty and we were not bothering anyone. I stopped to talk to some fishermen on the way back to my hotel. So many incredible stories. I wish that I had time to write them all down.

Mom was going to send me my tent on the road but she forgot .. so instead of camping in Key West, I need a Plan B ... Anyone know of some cheap, fun place to stay while I am down there? I don't want to stay in motels while on vacation.

While in Jacksonville I am staying with my aunt, who is part of a Biker Club called The Outlaws - I guess the club originated in Chicago but it has spread all over the world - When she first mentioned to me that she was in a 'a biker gang', I kept thinking "Yea... lots of people ride bikes in Florida. I am sure that it feels like a biker gang." But last night she invited me to tag along with her and let me tell you, it's not like a biker gang, it is a biker gang. She took me to their club house, full of surveillance cameras and full bar and everything. I have never been around something like that in my life. She is in a legit biker gang.

'Cheap' in Key West is about $150 a night. Unfortunately, winter is the height of the tourist season and the locals know it. There was a youth hostel open the last time I was there (2002), that might be the least expensive, but even the budget chains usually charge well over $100.

If you can stay on one of the smaller Keys, there are some cheaper alternatives. I've stayed at a place on Little Torch that wasn't too bad pricewise and the great thing staying anywhere on the Keys is the sunsets look great no matter where you are.

If you don't eat a meal at Clark's Fish Camp in Jax while you're there, you're missing out on some good food at a good neighborhood joint.

There's also a decent, reasonably priced motel on Marathon Key, across from a restaurant called The Quay - I don't remember what the motel is called, I'm afraid, but it's fine and good for the price. It's just a good half hour drive to Key West from there.

If you had a tent, I'd suggest the Jolly Roger on Grassy Key, and spring the extra few bucks for a campsite on the "tiki island" - but without a tent that's not very helpful.

Clarks Fish Camp is delicious - I've eaten there a couple times, not on this particular trip, though.... which reminds me, perhaps I'll take the trip there tomorrow... : )

Hey Kev and Photographer who is fun to talk to.... thanks for the help with other ideas. I might try to see if I can get the tent sent to Miami (I will be there for a few days before the Keys, I don't know if they will be able to get it out in three days, but we'll see)..... I SOSOSOSOSO wanted to camp.

But if that doesn't happen, it's good to have a few other leads on places to stay, so appreciate you taking the time to put in some suggestions.... I guess if the Keys are too expensive, I'll just have to settle some place else......

I'll make the best of it..... : )

I'd go back and ask the ranger EXACTLY what is illegal about taking pictures? Were you in a restricted area or does he have a tidal pool backed up in his shorts?

Well... I was naked. In a state park. On land that belongs to the state, which is run by rangers... who do not like naked people (even me... ha)

Oh well, you win one - lose one (we still got the photos... haha... and it looks like I am shooting with the photographer in Jacksonville again in Feb!)

If it's the week of Feb. 26, I can buy you dinner at Clark's.

I will be back in Jax Feb 1st-5th... : ( Always appreciate company, eating alone is crappy - looks like I miss you by a few weeks though
